Avaaz is an international organization that has as its mission remaking the world we live in being closer to what most people actually want. It was started in January 2007 and is based in New York, New York. Two organizations were involved in its founding, Moveon.org and Res Publica. There were also individual co-founders including Ricken Patel, Tom Perriello, Tom Pravda, Eli Pariser, Andrea Woodhouse, David Madden, and Jeremy Heimans. All of these people and organizations had extensive experience working in or with progressive nongovernmental organizations.
Most members engage with Avaaz through their online website and activities. This can include signing online petitions or participating in organized efforts to contact political officials on different matters. Some also participate in real-world protests in cities around the world. When people do this Azaaz supports them by providing information on the right way to go about it as well as how to draw media attention. Some of the issues they start petitions about on the Avaaz website are about climate change and the loss of species.
They encourage their members to engage with their politicians and making them address climate change as one of their top priorities. They have a petition going on right now encouraging people to donate money to helping stop the serious decline in bees that has been happening worldwide for the past several years as well. Another current petition is about a child named Ahed Tamimi who is being held in a military prison in Israel. Her home was raided by soldiers in the middle of the night and she was dragged off in handcuffs. All she had done was slap a police officer when her younger cousin was shot and killed by the police. Her predicament and how to help her are a top priority right now at Aveez.
