Billionaire entrepreneur Richard “Dick” DeVos is the son of Amway founder Richard DeVos. He is considered one of the wealthiest an successful businessmen in the U.S. Today, he has an estimated worth of $5 billion.
DeVos served as CEO of Amway from 1993-2002. He began working for the company right out of college. Working his way through a series of managerial positions through out the company, he was soon promoted to vice-president. After taking on the reigns as CEO, he completely revamped the company and helped sales increase by 50 percent.
The family purchased the Orlando Magic basketball team in 2002. Devos served as the team’s CEO for five years before he stepped down to branch out on his own. Devos concentrated on the company’s parent company Alticor. The company was restructured and streamlined to help the profit line.
Once his work was done with Amway, he started his own company, Windquest Group. The company manufactures home improvement items.
Devos and his wife, Betsy, are huge proponents of education. He is big on school vouchers and school choice. He has donated millions of dollars to several inner city schools. He also has his own aviation charter school to help underprivileged children.
He has also dabbled in politics. In 1990, Dick DeVos ran for a seat on the Michigan State of Education School Board. In 2006, he ran as a Republican to unseat Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm. He lost by a 14 point margin. Devos said that although he lost, it didn’t swear him off politics. He says he is open to running again in the future.
